Castles and Monuments

Northern Ireland has some of the finest castles on the island of Ireland. The earliest date back to Norman times and these walled homes continued to be built well into the 17th century. For example, from this era is Londonderry City's encircling walls and many parts of city itself. A quite well-preserved legacy from centuries of war, siege and expansion is still there for traveller to be explored.

The first known dwelling in Ireland is located at Mountsandel near Coleraine (dates back to 7,000 BC). Counties Tyrone and Fermanagh are especially rich in archaeology from Stone Age times. There are fantastic examples of abbeys, round towers, Celtic crosses, monastic sites and gravestones all over the area of Ulster; plenty of antiquities from the early Christian era.
